Comprehensive Career Guide: Commission Profile, Military Salary & SSB Blueprint

1. Life as a Technical Officer & Regimental Engineering Duties

Cadets commissioned through the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES) receive dual professional identities: they are trained as combat military commanders while holding an accredited engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering. Officers serve across combat engineering corps:

  • Corps of Engineers (Sappers): Combat bridging, minefield laying/clearing, airfield construction, road building in forward border regions with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
  • Corps of Signals: Tactical satellite communication systems, electronic warfare jamming, cyber defense networks, and AI-enabled battle management systems.
  • Corps of EME: Technical maintenance and battle-readiness of tanks (T-90, Arjun), infantry combat vehicles (BMP-2), artillery guns, and military helicopters.

2. 7th CPC Military Pay Scale & Monthly In-Hand Salary Breakdown

Upon graduation and commissioning as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, officers receive the full military compensation package under Pay Level-10:

Salary ComponentAmount (INR Per Month)
Basic Pay (Pay Level-10, Cell-1)₹56,100
Military Service Pay (MSP - Fixed for Armed Forces)₹15,500
Dearness Allowance (DA @ 50% on Basic + MSP)₹35,800
House Rent Allowance (HRA @ 27% in Peace Metro) / Free Govt Bungalow₹15,147
Transport Allowance (TPTA ₹7,200 + DA)₹10,800
High Altitude / Field Area Allowance (Subject to posting)₹10,500 – ₹25,000
Estimated Gross Monthly Salary (Peace Station)₹1,33,347 / Month
DSOP Fund & Armed Forces Insurance Deductions- ₹12,500 approx
Estimated Net In-Hand Take-Home Salary₹1,18,000 – ₹1,24,000 / Month

3. SSB Interview Strategy for 10+2 Candidates

Unlike graduate candidates who are tested on deep technical work experience, SSB boards evaluate 10+2 TES applicants on natural Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), mental alertness, and physical dynamism:

  • PPDT & Screening: Create a logical, constructive story with an active hero who solves a real problem. Speak confidently during the group discussion without interrupting others.
  • Psychological Testing: Maintain consistency across TAT stories, WAT sentences, and SRT responses. Avoid superficial, textbook responses; showcase genuine responsibility, family values, and initiative.
  • GTO Obstacle Tasks: Demonstrate teamwork in Progressive Group Tasks (PGT) and Command Task (CT). Focus on utilizing cantilever physics and bridging structures effectively.

4. Top 4 Application Mistakes to Avoid (Form Rejection Warning)

  • Incorrect JEE Mains Details: If the JEE Mains 2026 Application Number or CRL rank entered in the form differs from NTA records, candidature is summarily rejected during automated scrutiny.
  • PCM Percentage Calculation: The 60% requirement is an aggregate of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics marks only. Adding English, Computer Science, or Physical Education marks to cross 60% will cause disqualification.
  • Body Tattoos Policy: Permanent body tattoos are strictly prohibited on the face, neck, and hands. Only inner side of forearm tattoos and traditional tribal tattoos are permissible under military policy.
  • Date of Birth Discrepancy: The date of birth must match the Class 10th matriculation board certificate character-by-character.

5. Army Officer Career Promotion Ladder

TES officers enjoy assured time-scale promotions and seniority benefits: Lieutenant (Level-10, on Commissioning) → Captain (Level-10B, 2 years) → Major (Level-11, 6 years) → Lieutenant Colonel (Level-12A, 13 years) → Colonel (Level-13, Selection) → Brigadier (Level-13A) → Major General (Level-14).
