As per the latest NMC Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions Regulations, candidates must complete three full years of Senior Residency in a recognized medical college to qualify for direct appointment as an Assistant Professor (Level-12) through the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC). Completing this tenure establishes a secure pathway to permanent professorship in government medical institutions.
The Senior Resident appointment is for a tenure of up to 3 years. The academic hierarchy in Bihar medical education is: Senior Resident / Tutor (Level-11) → Assistant Professor (Level-12, via BPSC) → Associate Professor (Level-13A) → Additional Professor (Level-14) → Professor & Head of Department (HOD, Level-14A) → Principal / Superintendent (Level-15).
