Comprehensive Career Guide: Technical Plant Role, PSU Salary & CBT Strategy

1. Heavy Manufacturing Role & Shopfloor Responsibilities

Artisans in BHEL are the backbone of India's heavy engineering, power plant, and defense manufacturing infrastructure. Operating in world-class manufacturing divisions (such as High Pressure Boiler Plant in Trichy, Heavy Electrical Plant in Bhopal, and Heavy Electrical Equipment Plant in Haridwar), key responsibilities include:

  • Heavy Equipment Assembly: Precision fabrication, machining, and assembly of supercritical thermal boilers, steam and gas turbines, hydro generators, and nuclear reactor pressure vessels.
  • CNC Machine Operations: Setting up and operating heavy horizontal boring machines, 5-axis CNC machining centres, automated submerged arc welding (SAW), and TIG/MIG welding rigs.
  • Quality Assurance: Performing dimensional inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), ultrasonic and radiography checks on heavy forgings.

2. Maharatna Industrial Pay Scale & Monthly In-Hand Breakdown

BHEL Artisans are placed in industrial Wage Grade W-4 under CPSE pay norms with IDA and cafeteria allowances:

Salary ComponentAmount (INR Per Month)
Basic Pay (Wage Grade W-4, Minimum)₹29,500
Industrial Dearness Allowance (IDA @ 44.8%)₹13,216
Cafeteria Perks & Allowances (Up to 31% of Basic)₹9,145
House Rent Allowance (HRA @ 18% to 27%) / Free Township Quarters₹5,310 – ₹7,965
Shift Allowance & Medical Plant Allowance₹2,500
Estimated Gross Monthly Salary₹59,671 – ₹62,326 / Month
EPF, Gratuity & BHEL Contributory Health Deductions- ₹5,800 approx
Estimated Net In-Hand Take-Home Salary₹53,000 – ₹56,000 / Month

3. CBT Preparation & Technical Domain Weightage (100 Marks)

With 100 out of 150 marks dedicated directly to your technical trade, success in the CBT hinges on core ITI concepts:

  • Trade Theory: Revise standard DGT / NCVT curriculum textbooks thoroughly. Focus on engineering tolerances, limits and fits, surface roughness symbols, heat treatment processes, and cutting tool geometries.
  • Workshop Calculation & Science: Practice basic trigonometry, unit conversions, force calculations, and power transmission problems.

4. Top 4 Application Mistakes to Avoid (Form Rejection Warning)

  • Missing NAC Apprenticeship Certificate: In BHEL, candidates must possess BOTH NTC (ITI) and NAC (National Apprenticeship Certificate) recognized by NCVT. Candidates holding only ITI without apprenticeship completion are not eligible.
  • Trade Code Mismatch: Ensure the trade mentioned on your NAC certificate exactly matches the trade applied for; allied trade claims are not entertained.
  • Photograph Specifications: BHEL requires clear passport photographs taken within the last 3 months with a light background.
  • Single Application Rule: Candidates may apply for only ONE unit and ONE trade. Submitting multiple forms leads to cancellation of all applications.

5. Artisan Promotion Ladder in Maharatna PSU

Artisans enjoy structured time-bound promotions and fast-track departmental promotion examinations: Artisan Grade IV (W-4) → Artisan Grade III (W-5) → Artisan Grade II (W-6) → Artisan Grade I (W-7) → Master Artisan → Supervisor / Engineer (Executive Cadre, E-1).
